Meet Sim Taylor

Style of Art: Wood Fired Ceramics

Sim Taylor’s ceramic work is inspired by the landscape and the objects found within it. Much of his work draws influence from Weston Old Town Quarry — its striking quarry faces, historical and contemporary buildings, and the ever-changing colour palettes of the seasons. Each piece is either wheel-thrown or hand-built using local and indigenous materials. The wares are completed in the distinctive atmosphere of a wood-fired kiln, where the intensity and subtlety of the firing process create a unique aesthetic that unites form, surface, and colour.

Sim’s professional practice flows seamlessly between making and teaching. With over 30 years of experience in ceramics, he has dedicated his career to sharing the art and craft of clay and fire with others — a pursuit he regards as both a privilege and a source of mutual inspiration for teacher and student alike.

The Quarry Studios provides an ideal environment for Sim to continue this practice, offering opportunities for creative collaboration and community engagement among fellow artists and local residents.
